Babies don’t come with instructions. Neither do the feelings they bring up.
Maybe your baby cries a lot, and nothing seems to soothe them. Maybe feeding or sleep has become a daily battle, or your toddler’s big feelings leave you depleted.
Maybe you love your baby and still feel distant, anxious, or not like the parent you hoped to be.
These struggles are common, and they say nothing about how much you love your child. Often they live in the space between you and your baby, and that’s exactly where parent-infant therapy helps.
Parent-infant therapy helps you and your baby understand each other, so you both feel calmer, closer and more confident.
Families Come to Us When…
Their baby is hard to soothe, or cries more than they expected
Feeding, sleep or separation has become a struggle
A parent feels disconnected from their baby, or worries about their bond
Their toddler’s tantrums, clinginess or big feelings feel like too much
A hard pregnancy, birth, NICU stay or loss is still with them
A parent’s own childhood is showing up in ways they didn’t expect
A move, a new sibling or going back to work has shaken the family’s rhythm
What Is Parent-Infant Psychotherapy?
Parent-infant psychotherapy, also called dyadic therapy, treats the relationship between a parent and a baby or toddler. You and your child come to sessions together.
Babies can’t explain what they feel, but they communicate all the time through crying, eye contact, feeding, sleep and play. In sessions, we watch and play together, wonder aloud about what your baby may be telling you, and make room for the feelings your baby stirs up in you, including exhaustion, guilt, grief and love.
When parents feel understood, they are better able to understand their child. That’s the heart of this work.
Our approach is gentle and grounded in attachment research. We start with a parent consultation to hear your story. Then you and your baby or toddler meet with Danna at our Park Slope office for sessions that include play, observation and conversation.
Depending on your family’s needs, we draw on parent-infant psychotherapy, attachment-based and psychodynamic therapy, and parent guidance. With your permission, we coordinate with your pediatrician, OB/GYN or psychiatrist.
